Oyama History

The community of Oyama is located at one of the loveliest vantage points in the valley --- the isthmus between Wood Lake and Kalamalka Lake. Seventy-five years ago, it was an important hub in the central Okanagan by both rail and water, especially after a canal was built between the two lakes. Local farmers grew award-winning fruit and produce.

It was an exciting environment for a young Polish immigrant, Leo Gatzke, who came to work here as a laborer. By 1942, he had saved enough money to purchase a few acres of orchard at the west end of the isthmus, a choice spot that overlooks both lakes and the community itself.

The first year’s land payment had to be postponed due to a devastating hail; it was the first of many challenges met and conquered by the Gatzkes during many dramatic changes in the orchard industry. Through it all, the family has persevered, growing their orchard as large as 130 acres at one time. The Gatzkes have a long tradition of operating a roadside fruit stand; Grandpa Leo in his senior years found great enjoyment in managing the stand and meeting Okanagan visitors each summer.

The community of Oyama is today part of the District of Lake Country but it remains one of the most beautiful locales in the region, if not the country. Grandson Alan, his wife Ingrid and their two children are taking care of business in the traditional Gatzke fashion --- they grow great fruit and provide such a wonderfully warm and friendly service that Okanagan visitors keep coming back for more!
